We examine the influence of family background on appointment, promotion, and career length in the Qing civil service for officials who held provincial juren and national jinshi examination degrees and served between 1830 and 1912. For the analysis, we link three generations of family background information on exam degree holders to detailed and complete data on the appointment and career trajectories of officeholders in the China Government Employee Database-Qing (CGED-Q), which currently contains 4.6 million records of approximately 300,000 officials. We show that family background influences on appointment and careers mattered more for jinshi than for juren, even though the former were more highly selected based on education. For officials, the importance of family background for subsequent promotion actually increased with rank. Mapping the social origins of officials with exam degrees and understanding how family background and exam performance interacted to shape their subsequent career mobility informs longstanding debates about the permeability of national elites during the Qing and yields insight into the role of multigenerational stratification processes in shaping the composition of a national political elite.

主讲人简介：

康文林教授（Cameron Campbell）于2024年2月被任命为香港科技大学人文社会科学日本成人动画 署理院长。1989年，他毕业于加州理工日本成人动画 ，以优异成绩获得工程与应用科学和历史学学士学位。1995年，他获得了宾夕法尼亚大学的社会学和人口学博士学位，并就职于加州大学洛杉矶分校社会学系。自2005年起，他成为该校的正教授。2013年，他加入香港科技大学社会科学学部，并于2021年被任命为讲座教授。2020年至今，兼任华中师范大学历史文化日本成人动画 特聘教授。康文林的研究聚焦于家庭、人口和社会分层，尤其关注历史上的中国，并致力于比较研究。他正与李中清-康文林研究团队的合作者和学生一起，基于从历史资料中构建的官员和考取功名者数据库，研究19世纪中国的教育和政治精英。他一共发表了66篇经同行评审的研究论文，部分论文发表在 American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, 和 Demography 等社会学顶尖期刊上。他还与其他作者共同著有四本书，包括 Fate and Fortune in Rural China (剑桥大学出版社， 1997年) 和《压力下的生活：1700-1900年欧洲和亚洲的死亡率和生活水平》（麻省理工日本成人动画 出版社，2004年）。他的研究得到了美国国立卫生研究院和香港研究资助局的资助。 康文林于2004年被授予古根海姆学者奖，2022年任斯坦福大学行为科学高级研究中心研究员。
